On the 26th and 27th of April, the Bury Model Flying Club are hosting a two-day model flying event at Rougham Airfield which is about two miles east of Bury St Edmunds on the A14. Access to the airfield is via Rougham Industrial Estate. Flying begins each day at 10am and finishes at 4pm.
This is the second such event that the BMFC have organised, and it is expected that model pilots from all over the East Anglia region will take part. There will be support from trade and refreshment stands, and the recently restored Control Tower will be open for inspection on both days.
The event is open to the public on both days, and admission charges are £5.00 for adults, £3.00 for juniors and seniors, and children under 12 get in free.
The Bury Model Flying Club (BMFC) is one of the largest model flying clubs in the area, and was originally formed in 1967 by a group of enthusiastic aircraft modellers. Today the club has a membership of well over 100, and members' range from schoolchildren to senior citizens. Most aeronautical interests are catered for and all types of aircraft are modelled in Radio Controlled form. These include vintage, military and scale aircraft, civil list aircraft, aerobatic aircraft, gliders and helicopters. A fairly recent innovation is jet models powered with real gas turbine motors. These are very fast and spectacular, and it is hoped that some of these jets will be flown over the weekend. There should be a number of very large models being demonstrated including the half full size Eastbourne shown in the picture below. Also due to be demonstrated are models that use clean and quiet electrical power.
